Prawn stock for the seawater ponds are sourced from domesticated breeding prawns which live in crystal clear water at Flying Fish Point in Innisfail (Far North Queensland).

Baby prawns are stocked into the seawater ponds and enjoy an all-natural feeding regime. At around five months the prawns have grown to market-size and are ready for harvest.

While fish populations are under pressure through overfishing of the high seas, aquaculture has emerged as the fastest-growing animal food producing sector and now accounts for 47 percent of all fish consumed by humans as food.

However not all aquafarming is environmentally friendly. Mindful of the problems effluent water can bring to the environment, Seafarm retains this water and reuses it within the farm to successfully fill ponds for stocking, generating a food source for the young prawns.

The net result of water reuse being that more nutrients are retained within the farm and converted into prawn flesh and less are lost to the environment.

Seafarm has entered into a Voluntary Conservation Agreement with the Queensland government whereby a large parcel of land totalling more than 45 hectares has been retained in perpetuity as a nature buffer between our two farms. This allows the movement of animals in and around the sites while acknowledging the sensitivity of an associated riparian habitat adjacent to Five Mile Creek.
